The green bags you see around Reservoir Hill trees are slow-release watering bags, also known as Treegator® Bags. The bags release about 20 gallons of water slowly and evenly, making sure that the water penetrates the tree’s roots without evaporating or spilling out. As part of its Tree Canopy project, RHIC has placed the bags on many of the youngest trees in the neighborhood in an effort to make it easier for residents to water their trees. It is critical that young trees receive watering at least once a week during the summer, so here is a quick lesson for how to properly use your bag:
First, place the bag around your tree. It doesn’t matter which way the zipper is facing.
Next, zip the bag all the way up.
Insert your hose/watering jug into the narrow slit toward the top of the bag on the opposite side of the zipper. Do not water in the gap between the tree and the bag.
Fill the bag, and then sit back and watch it release the water slowly over the next 6-8 hours.
