Volunteers searching for granite among the Whitelock St. demolition debris (7/28/12)

This past Saturday a hardy group of neighbors took to the hills of Whitelock St. to search for buried treasure–err, chunks of granite that we can re-purpose into larger seating areas and walkways as part of the new Whitelock St. community space project. Thanks to the remains of the original buildings on Whitelock St. and Baltimore City’s generous decision to leave us with all the demolition debris, we didn’t have to look too hard.

Our idea is that eventually we’ll be able to use the granite to make projects like these:


So on a sweltering Baltimore summer morning, we were scraping for every piece we could find:

It takes a lot of sweat to pull out that much granite:
